Swimming Pool Leak Repair Services

In addition to structural leaks, skimmers, main drains, and return lines are top culprits of swimming pool and spa leaks. We not only find those leaks, but we can also repair them.

Depending on the circumstances, major repairs, such as water features or certain plumbing lines, may be referred back to the pool builder for repairs. We take our repair services seriously and make every effort to ensure you are satisfied with the workmanship of the repair. Before a leak detection or repair is performed, please make sure the water is clean, clear and pool level is full.

Structural repairs
Concrete/gunite, vinyl, and fiberglass are the three main types of in-ground swimming pool materials. Each is vulnerable to different forms of leaks and requires various methods to repair.

Structural types

Gunite swimming pool repair
Gunite is a mixture of cement, sand and water that can be molded into any shape desired. As the most versatile construction material for pools, gunite is sprayed or blown onto a rebar framework to form and give strength to the structure. Gunite is porous and should not be used by itself to construct a pool. There must be a water barrier between the porous gunite and the pool water. Plaster is then applied to not only ensure a smooth touch on the pool surface, but also to create a water barrier between the pool water and the gunite.  If the plaster is not thick enough, it could allow water to seep through the gunite. This will result in water loss that is difficult to isolate without draining the pool. There are methods to repair a pool that is not properly sealed with enough plaster. Seasonal changes such as freezing and thawing will cause plaster to eventually crack. Winterizing your pool properly will help to keep your pool’s gunite/plaster structure intact.

Vinyl liner swimming pool repair
Vinyl liners can leak through the natural deterioration process and environmental exposure. If the vinyl liner has a small puncture, we can locate it and patch it very easily. If the leak has gone on for a long time, you may be in danger of causing greater damage to the liner. A leak or tear in the liner allows water to collect behind the liner causing it to stretch and be pulled from its top edge. If you suspect a leak in your vinyl liner pool, don’t ignore it, it could save you a lot of grief if you act quickly.

Fiberglass swimming pool repair
Fiberglass pools are prefabricated shells that are nearly indestructible. However, they can still be susceptible to leaks. When a fiberglass pool has a leak, it is important to maintain the water level as the pool shell may "float" out of the ground if the water level in the pool is lower than the water level in the ground around the pool. In addition, if the water level is too low, the sides of the pool could bulge inward from the pressure of the surrounding soil. A floating fiberglass pool could crack the deck as well as cause massive damage to the pool’s plumbing.

Above-ground swimming pool repair
Many above-ground pools will experience leaks in the liner of the pool due to the nature of the exposed structure. If you are up to the task, some above-ground pool owners are able to find and patch leaks by diving the pool and visually inspecting the lining. It takes patience and diligence to complete, however it is the least expensive way to repair your leaking above-ground pool. There are several products available at your local pool supply store that will help you locate and patch a leaking above ground pool. If you are not able to find the leak, we can detect and repair the leak for you. Our experienced professionals routinely find and repair leaks in the pool’s plumbing system.

Swimming pool plumbing repairs
Leaks found in the pool’s plumbing lines and are most often due to corrosion or ground movement. Our experienced professionals routinely find and repair leaks in the pool’s plumbing system.
Return lines
The pool’s return lines return water from the pump and filter back to the pool. Leaks in the return line, at times, require penetrating the pool deck to gain access to the leak location.
Suction lines
The pool’s suction lines remove water from the pool or spa to recirculate the water through the filter, then back through the return lines to the pool or spa. The suction lines begin at the skimmer and the main drain.

If a leak is found in the suction line, the ground around the pool, equipment or deck may need to be penetrated to access the line that requires repair.

Main drain

The main drains are usually located on the lowest point in the pool, so the entire pool surface slants toward them. Most of the dirt and debris that sinks to the bottom of the pool exits the pool through these drains. Like all leaks, leaking main drains need to be repaired as soon as possible. The pressure of the water at the bottom of the pool could lead to massive water loss if the main drain has failed. Water could drop as much as three feet per day.

Most often, we can repair the main drain depending on the nature of the leak. Draining the pool could cause additional costly problems to occur if a high water table is present. In many cases, we can repair the leak without draining the pool. We have the equipment and expertise to properly repair your main drain without draining your pool or your wallet.

Pump & filter

Pool pumps usually last for about 8 years before needing to be replaced or rebuilt. In most cases, you should be able to repair pump leaks yourself. For example, leaks that appear in the threading of the connections, are simple fixes you, as a homeowner, can make.

If you need a new pump, contact your local pool supply store to find an installer. If you come across a mystery leak in your pump or you prefer a professional’s expertise, contact us at 8168 5713.

Crack injection

For cracks in gunite and plaster pools, high pressure pump is used to inject flexible polymer adhesive into the offending crack to seal and adhere the crack together providing a flexible water proof bond.

Skimmer replacement
Skimmers usually crack when they become brittle with age or connections may simply fail. A failed skimmer connection could cause the pump to suck air and lose prime. Leaking skimmers can be repaired, but sometimes they need to be completely replaced to eliminate the source of the leak. Once we identify a leak in the skimmer, we will provide an estimate for either its repair or replacement.

Deck repair
If the leak in your pool has caused damage to your deck, we find the leak first, and then provide an estimate on the repairs for the leak and the deck. The deck can shift and crack if the ground below has been washed away by a persistent leak. The best solution in this circumstance is to call in your pool builder to evaluate the situation after the leak has been isolated and repaired.
There are times the deck needs to be cut to make repairs on the pool’s plumbing, skimmer, or autofill. We will repair the deck, and we always clean up after the work has been performed.

Accessories

Pool accessories may also be the cause of leaks and need repair.

Lights

Underwater lighting may leak due to a bad fitting, deteriorated conduit or failed seal in the light bucket. Part of testing the pool for leaks includes checking the lighting components to make sure they are water tight.

Water features

Some pools have water features included in the design. Occasionally, these leaks are difficult to locate due to the complex structure of the materials used to construct the water feature. Our high-tech equipment and experienced specialists can isolate the leak to a particular water feature.

Few Ways to Detect Swimming Pool Leakage

Here got few ways to share for how to find a leak in your swimming pool: -
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Locating the Leak
1. Check the obvious first. Here's a list of common problems that could indicate a leak, in no particular order:
  • Are there any leaks at the equipment pad? Look closely at the filter, pump, heater and the pipe valves.
  • Are there any wet areas around the pool? Check the ground for moisture. Walk around the pool, and by the pool and the equipment. Check for wet soil and sunken or eroding areas.
  • Do you have a vinyl liner pool? Look for tears or separations around all the fittings, skimmers, returns, cleaner line, lights, steps and the corners.
2. If you want to confirm a leak, try one of these techniques to double-check. If you suspect your pool is leaking, there are several ways to check.
  • Mark the water level of the pool at the skimmer. Use a piece of tape or grease pencil to mark the water level. Check the mark 24 hours later. Your pool should lose no more than 14 inch (0.6 cm) per day. Otherwise, a leak is indicated.
Place a bucket filled with pool water on a pool step (weight it with a rock or brick). Mark the water level on both the inside and the outside of the bucket. Make sure the water levels are the same inside the bucket as the pool water level outside the bucket. Check the mark 24 hours later. If there's a greater drop in the line on the outside of the bucket, a leak in the pool is indicated. This test needs to be conducted with the pump on, then again with the pump off.

3. Determine the location of the leak. If you determine that your pool is losing water, turn off the filtration system and note where the water stops dropping. Vinyl Liner pools need to have water in them at all times! Stop this test if you have a liner pool and the water level is dropping rapidly. Start adding water and call a pool professional.
  • If the water stops at the bottom of skimmer opening, the leak is probably in the skimmer or filtration system (including the pipes). If you suspect you have a leak in the filtration system:
    • Check, first, to see if you see air bubbles in the water in the return line when the pool's pump is running. If so, there is a leak in the suction side of the filtration system.
    • Ensure the pump basket lid is on tight and that the lid o-ring is lubed and in good condition.
  • If the water stops at the light, the leak is probably at the light housing.
  • If the water drops below the light, then there may be a leak in the drain at the bottom the pool.
  • If the pool is losing more water while the pump is running, the leak is on the return line side of the system. In this case, check the waste or backwash line for running water,
  • If you suspect you have a leak in the skimmer, light, liner, look closely for something that looks like a crack, gap or tear.
4. Put a drop or two of dye test solution or some of your pH indicator test reagent near a suspected leak point. Do this with the pump shut off and the water still. See if the dye is sucked into the crack, gap or tear.

Fixing the Leak
1. Fix leaks you've identified. Your treatment of the leak will depend on its location and nature:
  • Skimmer leaks: The most common leak is a separation between the plastic skimmer and the concrete pool. This is easily fixed with pool putty.
  • Light leaks: Often the conduit pipe will come apart, break or separate from the niche. This is difficult to patch. There are various methods to patch a bad conduit connection. A two part epoxy that dries hard, with putty, silicone or caulk are ways to fix this problem.
  • Liner leaks: Simply patch it with a vinyl liner patch kit. If underwater, use a wet patch kit.
2. Note that many leaks are not detectable using the suggestions above. Now it's time to call a professional! Thanks to state-of-the-art technology, most pool or spa leaks can be found and repaired without major disruption.
  • Compressed air is often used to pressurize a pipe. The air displaces the water in the pipe until it reaches the leak, at which point bubbles escape from the hole to reveal the problem area. Or, where a pipe fails to maintain a constant air pressure, a leak exists.
  • Other times, a special television camera is snaked through plumbing pipes to spot leaks. Pool techs inject air into a pipe, then listen electronically for sounds of air escaping with a super-sensitive microphone.
  • You should expect to pay for high-tech leak detection, depending upon the location and complexity of the problem. Repairs are extra.

3. Understand pool plumbing basics to visualize what a pool tech might do to fix the leak. The basic configuration of a swimming pool plumbing and filtration system is simple. Water is pulled through the skimmer and main drains in the swimming pool by the pool pump. The water travels underground to the mechanical room where it passes through the pump strainer basket and is then pushed through the filter and heater as well as any other peripherals such as chlorinators. It is eventually piped back to the pool through the return lines.
  • In addition to these closed system lines, there are also a few additional aspects to the swimming pool plumbing system which do not operate in a closed (pressurized) system. Most swimming pools employ an open system (gravity fed, not pressurized) equalizer line that helps the pool pump to retain its prime during periods of low water level.
  • This equalizer line is often forgotten about or ignored during renovations as replacing the line is a costly and time consuming enterprise. The equalizer line will connect to the bottom of the skimmer and the other end to either the main drains, or a side port in the wall of the pool near to the location of the skimmer. It is the pipe that leads from the bottom of the skimmer down to the main drains that is often overlooked. Since this is a non pressure line it would tend to leak less than a pressurized line, but on average this pipe can also be older than the rest of your pool plumbing system increasing it as a candidate for unexplained water loss.
  • Plumbing systems are a constant source for water loss for a host of different reasons ranging from pipe material, installation quality, age, configuration and soil conditions. Before you begin to tear apart your plumbing system you need to first isolate the leak to determine if it is located in the plumbing system, or in the structure of the pool itself.

Swimming Pool Waterproofing

A full waterproofing system should be applied before putting the swimming pool in service. The cement base products are ideal for this application. The concrete is to be treated before fixing the tiles and the following steps are to be considered:

Ø  Preparation of the surface

Ø  Presence of holes

Ø  Honeycombing

Ø  Big holes & damaged concrete

Ø  Joints treatment

Ø  Plastering

Ø  Flooring screed

Service Solution
WATERPROOFING: After assuring that all the above steps have been maintained, the water tank is ready to receive the final product in the cement waterproofing system, the flexible high performance product is to be used in 3 layers.

Complementary systems
TILING: Walls and floor of the swimming pool are ready to receive the final step of this system.

GROUTING: After the fixation of tiles, all the area must be cleaned with fresh water and kept untouched for 24 hours in order to allow the tiling to be set, then all the tiles joints should be filled with Carrojoint. Apply Carrojoint with a rubber spatula into the joints by filling all the gaps. Remove surplus grout with a damp sponge. Use the product within a maximum of 2 hours after mixing. When the grout is dry, clean the tiles with a dry cloth.

Reinforced concrete structures are usually used in the construction of swimming pools. As the swimming pool is permanently wet, normal concrete walls or hollow blocked walls will not be sufficient and water leakage will eventually appear. A full waterproofing system must be applied as a protection against aggressive agents to ensure its durability before the pool can be put in service.

Over time the waterproofing abilities of your pool may have deteriorated due to corrosion and wear. Our swimming pool waterproofing treatment is customised based on your swimming pool structure and tile usage and includes sealants and epoxy coating treatments. Our waterproofing systems gives a layer of protection to the concrete and allow longer usage without compromise to the integrity of your swimming pool structure.

Solution For Cloudy Pool

If you have determined that any of the previously mentioned chemical levels are off, you will need to adjust the chemicals in your pool to balance them out. If your pH or TA levels are too high, you may need a pH reducer to bring your levels back down. If the CH is high, try reducing the amount of calcium-based chlorine that you are using. After adjusting the chemicals, run the pool filter system and re-test again in 12-24 hours. If your pool is still cloudy, try adding a pool clarifier chemical to enable your filter to remove the fine debris, keeping your filter running and check for improvement. This may require a few cycles, but be careful not to use too much clarifier or it could have adverse effects. If you are still having issues with pool water cloudiness, you should consider consulting a pool professional that can test and resolve the problem. Until then, it is strongly encouraged to stay out of the water as it can potentially be harmful.
